Chinspot Batis

The Chinspot Batis is a tiny, busy bird of woodland, smartly dressed in grey, black and white, with a bright yellow eye.
The name comes from the female, who has a neat chestnut spot on her chin and a chestnut band across her breast; the male has a broad black breast band instead. Pairs move through the trees together, snapping up insects from leaves and twigs.
Its call is one of the easiest to learn: a descending three-note whistle that sounds just like “three blind mice”. I photographed this one in the Kruger National Park.
